Harboring Hope begins with Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus. The overture to Beethoven’s only full-length ballet, its vibrant energy and triumphant spirit remind us that progress and renewal are often born from courage in the face of adversity. With hauntingly beautiful lyricism, Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk’s Melody for string orchestra has become a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and national identity. Alan Hovhaness’s Celestial Gate suggests a meditative passage between earthly and celestial realms, reflecting the composer’s enduring vision of music as a path to the divine. Bold and celebratory, Joan Tower’s Made in America captures the spirit of perseverance through its driving rhythms and vivid colors. Derived from the melody of “America the Beautiful,” the work resonates anew in the context of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, offering a musical portrait of struggle, endurance, and hope for the future.
