SUMMARY:MainStage Concert: The People That Inspire Us
DESCRIPTION:Human connections can often be the spark that breathes life into great music. The People That Inspire Us begins with Revelry by trailblazing American composer and Imani Winds founder and WHCO Spotlight Composer\, Valerie Coleman. The work\, described by the composer as “a sensory guide to the reckless abandon that emerges when people congregate” pulses with rhythmic drive and jubilant energy. We continue with Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor\, inspiring not only because it was composed by a woman in a male-dominated musical world\, but because of its extraordinary emotional depth\, formal elegance\, and expressive power. Our program concludes with a rarely heard gem from Louise Farrenc\, a French Romantic composer and groundbreaking music educator. Her Nonet combines the textures of strings and winds in a richly melodic\, symphonic-scale chamber work. \nRepertoire\n\nValerie Coleman: Revelry\nClara Schumann: Piano Trio in G minor\, Op. 17\nLouise Farrenc: Nonet in E-Flat Major\, Op. 38\n\nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. DESCRIPTION:This Spanish-language performance by Cornerstone Chorale features a version created by Mexican musician and librettist Mario Montenegro\, giving Handel’s original music a new twist! \nThe Chorale is joined by the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra and will feature soloists Maria Brea (soprano)\, Guadalupe Peraza (mezzo-soprano)\, Cristóbal Arias (tenor)\, and Gilberto Gómez (baritone). Music Director Richard Stout conducts. \nSupport for this project comes from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, and from the Medical Center Neighborhood Fund.

SUMMARY:MainStage Concert: The Music That Inspires Us
DESCRIPTION:Composers often find inspiration from other music\, drawing from history\, tradition\, and artistic lineage. The Music That Inspires Us begins with Reena Esmail’s Avartan\, a transcendent fusion of Indian and Western classical traditions. Next on the program is Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra. Written in 2011\, the piece was inspired by a moment in a Haydn string quartet where the music suddenly shifts in tone and texture. Shaw describes Entr’acte as “taking you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass\,” a kind of musical portal that begins in a classical idiom and gradually distorts it. We will conclude the program with Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. Taken from his ballet on the Italian commedia dell’arte character\, the Pulcinella Suite is a witty and colorful homage to 18th-century Italian Baroque music filtered through Stravinsky’s modernist lens. \nRepertoire\n\nReena Esmail: Avartan\nCaroline Shaw: Entr’acte\nIgor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite\n\nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission.
