DESCRIPTION:Join WHCO in beginning our 2026–27 season of exploring Resilience with Breaking Barriers\, a program that celebrates bold artistic voices who challenged the expectations of their time. \nRepertoire: \n\nIgor Stravinsky: Dumbarton Oaks\nAndrea Casarrubios: Herencia\nLouise Farrenc: Symphony No. 3\n\nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. Reception with the musicians to follow. \n\nBreaking Barriers begins with Dumbarton Oaks\, Igor Stravinsky’s witty and elegant chamber concerto inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Herencia (“Heritage”) by Andrea Casarrubios is a deeply personal reflection on memory\, identity\, and cultural roots. Drawing inspiration from the composer’s Spanish heritage\, the work weaves lyrical melodies and evocative textures into a poignant musical tribute to the traditions and stories that span generations. We conclude our program with Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3. Completed in 1847\, it is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of her orchestral output. Blending Classical balance with Romantic intensity\, the work showcases a command of orchestral color\, dramatic structure\, and lyrical invention that affirms her place among the leading symphonic composers of her era.

Reception with the musicians to follow. \n\nIn Unyielding Voices\, we explore both individuals and musical works that endure across time. Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston brings the words and spirit of Langston Hughes vividly to life through a compelling blend of music and spoken word\, featuring Pushcart Prize-nominated multidisciplinary artist Daemond Arrindell. Each movement captures a different facet of Hughes’s voice: playful\, reflective\, and direct. Drawing on jazz\, classical\, and vernacular traditions to illuminate his lasting cultural impact\, Coleman’s work reminds us that resilience is often found in the act of telling one’s story\, of preserving identity and truth through art. Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major offers a complementary perspective\, one rooted in connection and shared experience. With its expansive lyricism\, vibrant character\, and conversational interplay among instruments\, the Septet invites listeners into a richly human musical dialogue that showcases resilience through its emotional depth.

Reception with the musicians to follow. \n\nHarboring Hope begins with Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus. The overture to Beethoven’s only full-length ballet\, its vibrant energy and triumphant spirit remind us that progress and renewal are often born from courage in the face of adversity. With hauntingly beautiful lyricism\, Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk’s Melody for string orchestra has become a symbol of remembrance\, resilience\, and national identity. Alan Hovhaness’s Celestial Gate suggests a meditative passage between earthly and celestial realms\, reflecting the composer’s enduring vision of music as a path to the divine. Bold and celebratory\, Joan Tower’s Made in America captures the spirit of perseverance through its driving rhythms and vivid colors. Derived from the melody of “America the Beautiful\,” the work resonates anew in the context of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, offering a musical portrait of struggle\, endurance\, and hope for the future.
