DESCRIPTION:Bring your picnic blanket to relax with the Riverside Brass Quintet in Inwood Hill Park and enjoy a program that is “quintessentially NYC” with music by George Gershwin\, Lin Manuel Miranda\, Jon Batiste\, Will Aaronson and more.  \nWhat started as a group of friends reading music and sharing bagels in an apartment on Riverside Drive\, Riverside Brass Quintet (RBQ) redefines contemporary chamber music through novel performances\, community-driven projects\, and purposeful collaboration. RBQ is committed to uplifting local artists and ensembles; their Brass on Broadway series enabled Upper Manhattan residents to attend and explore popular Broadway music in three varied venues across Central Harlem\, Washington Heights and Inwood. \nThis performance takes place in Inwood Hill Park\, on Pat’s Lawn. Bathrooms can be found inside the nearby Nature Center or the restaurant Inwood Farm with purchase of food or beverage. Come early to talk a walk in the largest remaining old-growth forest in Manhattan\, explore the newly renovated Inwood Hill Nature Center and be sure to stop by our WHCO sponsor CHOCnyc for their incredible homemade ice cream. \nThese concerts are free and open to the public. The program begins with Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans\, a thrilling contemporary work for chamber orchestra that channels the turbulence and strength of the sea. This work draws inspiration and its title from A Woman Speaks – a poem by Audre Lorde\, and uses rhythm\, lyrical melodies\, and the voices of the musicians themselves to equate the changes of the natural world with the emotional resilience of the human heart. Next on the program\, WHCO is joined by Ariadne Greif for Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, a nostalgic meditation on childhood and place\, set to the words of James Agee. SUMMARY:MainStage Concert: The Music That Inspires Us
DESCRIPTION:Composers often find inspiration from other music\, drawing from history\, tradition\, and artistic lineage. The Music That Inspires Us begins with Reena Esmail’s Avartan\, a transcendent fusion of Indian and Western classical traditions. Next on the program is Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra. Written in 2011\, the piece was inspired by a moment in a Haydn string quartet where the music suddenly shifts in tone and texture. Shaw describes Entr’acte as “taking you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass\,” a kind of musical portal that begins in a classical idiom and gradually distorts it. We will conclude the program with Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. Taken from his ballet on the Italian commedia dell’arte character\, the Pulcinella Suite is a witty and colorful homage to 18th-century Italian Baroque music filtered through Stravinsky’s modernist lens. \nRepertoire\n\nReena Esmail: Avartan\nCaroline Shaw: Entr’acte\nIgor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite\n\nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission.
